...I shared this page on my Facebook account Jonathan Huggybear on June 21, 2017 with this story:

Eugene Villaluz and Ding Mercado formed The New Minstrels while they were still in San Beda College. They were soon joined by Louie Reyes, Aida Balmaceda, Eileen Dolina, Annette Belen, Meiling Gozun, Vic Baclagon, Cesar de la Fuente, Rene Puno and many more through the years, including Ray-An Fuentes, Joey Albert and Chad Borja.

The New Minstrels rose to stardom in the 70s, one of the country's premier showbands together with the Circus Band, whose members have included some of the biggest names in OPM: Hajji Alejandro, Tillie Moreno, Pat Castillo, Jacqui Magno and Basil Valdez.

Their songs are timeless such as "Smile," "Nothing I Want More," "I Don't Love You Anymore," and "Ikaw, Ako, Tayo (Magkakapatid). They have created their own versions of "Buhat," "Kahit Na Magtiis," "Diyos Lamang Ang Nakakaalam" and other immortal classics.

One of the most anticipated events in the Philippine music scene is when The New Minstrels and the Circus Band come together and make musical history, like "See You in September" in 2016 at The Solaire, "We Got The Love" in 2014 and "The Circus Band and The New Minstrels Greatest Hits Reunion" in 2013, both at the PICC Plenary Hall.

In 2017, The New Minstrels and The CompanY joined together for the first time in the hit Valentine's concert "Happy Together," also at the Plenary. The CompanY is composed of Moy Ortiz, the frontman and also Eugene's nephew; Annie Quintos, Cecile Bautista, Reuben Llorente and Sweet Plantado who appears in the movie "I Do Bidoo," the star-studded blockbuster movie inspired by the music of the Apo Hiking Society.

Eugene Villaluz, who also sang the iconic "Gulong Ng Palad" theme, passed away last June 10 without still being named National Artist For Music which he deserves for all his contributions to our musical heritage as an artist, songwriter, stage actor, record producer, a mentor to many, and an inspiration to many, many more.
